Aloha! Let's Party!
Or How To Have Fun in 250 Jello Shooters or Less
oh... and the seige cook-off
We learned that the siege cook-off started at 4:00 pm on the
Thursday before we left for Fort Ord. We thought we could pick up
our stuff early in the day and be done by lunch, but it turns out the
siege cook-off was definitely going to cut into the time we had
planned to use for the feast prep.

After a few frantic emails, it was decided that I would still participate
in the siege cook-off but leave in time to serve at the feast. It was
very important to me that I help Erin in any way I could as Villa
Luna, and Erin especially, have been extremely kind to us.

The siege cook-off  for our team was hysterical! Gaby and Christine
nearly came to blows, our table broke, we got moldy plums in our
bag, and our hand made pottery exploded with half of our allotment
of almonds in it.
Mistress Rowan, beaming and having fun!

So we get this (unopened) can of prunes and we crack it open and it's definitely moldy. We have a very funny discussion about
whether this was actually pretty period if we had been under siege and so maybe we should just use them? We finally decide we
will let Master Juan choose whether he wants to eat a moldy plum or not.

I sprint over to DE (their sunshade has big gothic DE's all over it) and ask him if they were supposed to be that way and he was
very upset because he had just purchased them prior to driving up and there were no substitutes on hand. So I sprint back to our
encampment and gather up every piece of fruit we could find and then sprint back to DE to get approval on our fruit. We got two
apples and one pear to use.

So Cesca is grinding meat for the sausage when one of the legs of the table just completely falls off! Our table full of food and
ingredients goes sliding to the ground in horrific slow-mo while Gaby grabs the table and balances it. We move everything off to
another table and set up the (lower) broken table as a cutting surface.

In our box: Meat tenderloin, sugar, crystallized ginger, rye flour <groan>, turnips, lard, mozzarella cheese, oatmeal and a few other
items, including the plums.

We brought: I home brew beer, wine, sausage casings, suet, rosemary, milk, cream, eggplant, garlic (15 cloves roasted, 4 ounces
chopped, and 20 whole cloves), onions, and cinnamon and fennel seed.

We made: Cheese and eggplant fritters, stew, sausages, apple compote, caramelized onions, fried turnips with cheese, a pudding
and I can't remember what else?

We got done at 6:00 pm and I ran back to my encampment to put on my Hawaiian Viking and help serve the feast. Cesca, Gaby
and Christy waited for the judges. We got 80 out of 100 on our scoring sheet, which is a B and not too shabby! Of course they
came to try everything about an hour after we finished cooking, so everything was stone cold. For the next siege cook-off I would
definitely stagger the pick-up time for the food so the judges could get around to each team in turn while things were hot.

So I get back to camp and get dressed and the luau food starts rolling out. Everything was so good! V was on dish detail because
dishes needed to be washed in between courses so we had enough serving platters to go around. This is one of the extenuating
circumstances of catering at a camping event; there is only so much space to bring the things you need! Everyone had such a fun
time. My girlfriend, Kelli, and Sauen were on bar detail. I brought about 250 mai-tai flavored jello shooters and there were a
variety of fruity mixed drinks.
I'd been trying to get Kelly to come to an event because she is hot and
single and there are so many cute guys in the SCA. So it just so happens
that she ends up at Arts and Sciences for her first event, which is not a
stick-jock event, generally speaking. But there are two cute single guys at
the party, Conall and Ascelin's hottie brother-in-law

I've been around Ascelin's b-i-l a few times and not heard him utter a
single word, but he is dancing the hula later in the evening and has been
drinking liquid courage for a few hours and he does actually belly up to
bar and chat with Kels.

Then the entertainment begins! The women of Villa Luna do a beautiful
hula dance, which unfortunately I did not get a picture of!

What I
do get a picture of is the men folk's dignified and tasteful rendition
of the hookilau. Below is Alderon acting out the Hawaiian hula for "I'm
dead sexy!" In the background are Ferrin and little Nicolaus.
This picture of Erin about sums up what it is like
to cater dinner for 75... in the dirt out of a 8ft by
8ft tent, but she did a fabulous job!

I am not sure how I managed to miss getting a picture of
Rat in his coconut bra dancing, but he certainly shook it
for Mistress Rowan also!

Queen Kaaren and Their Highnesses Titus and Eona were
also in attendance. Below is a picture of His Highness
Titus holding little Fredi. My daughter, Sara, is to his
Highness' right and Ysa is just next to her.
Anybody got a dollar?
It is safe to say a great time was had by all! Congratulations on a
great job to Eirienach, Denise, Meabh, Ginaetta, Euriol and
everyone else who planned and executed the vigil, ceremony and
feast!

And, of course, Congratulations to Mistress Rowan on her
elevation to laurel!
