Team Archery Competition

Object of the contest:
To either eliminate the opposing team(s) by attrition or by first achieving a pre-
determined Winning Score.

Overview:
Multiple teams of equal numbers of teammates are chosen. Each team is given an
equal number of flags, which are numbered from 1 to 6 sequentially. Each team takes
turns planting a flag on the archery range at any distance between five yards and 50
yards. Teams submit a lineup to the referees, and once submitted can only be
changed by the elimination of a teammate. The first two archers on each team are
called forward, and two flags are selected by two rolls of a die. Each archer looses two
arrows from both flags. The losing archer is eliminated (or alternately given one strike
for double elimination) and the process continues with the next archers in the lineup of
each team. If all the archers of a team are eliminated, the team is removed from the
competition. If any team achieves a Winning Score which is determined before hand,
that team wins as long as they have at least one active archer.

The Devil is in the Details.

The Target and Range:

Target:
The target will be a modified roundel sixty centimeters in radius. Each circle of
the roundel will have an inner and outer scoring areas, so that there are four scoring
areas total.

Range:
The range will be any location that provides safe archery as determined by the marshal
in charge, and consistent with the rules of archery safety of the SCA, and does not
violate mundane laws. The range will have distance arcs at five yards and 50 yards.

The Equipment:

Bows:
Any longbow, recurve or crossbow that is deemed safe by the archery marshal in
charge may be used. Arrows must be wooden. No modern sights, stabilizers, clickers,
plungers, scopes, range finders or release mechanisms will be allowed. Crossbows
may not use sights. All equipment must conform to the standards of SCA archery.

Flags:
There will be six flags, numbered one through six sequentially. These flags will be on
pointed stakes so that they can be driven into the ground. If the ground in impenetrable,
the flags shall have some method of being fixed to one spot on the ground.

The Teams:
There can be two, three, four, five or six teams. Each team should have at least three
members, and each team will have the same number of members. It is not required
that each member be of similar ability.

Starting the competition

Creating the Lineup:
While being allowed to visually size up the competition, each team will decide on a
Lineup which is written down and given to the referees. Once submitted, this lineup is
only changed through the elimination of a competitor in a Match. See “Elimination”
below. The Lineup is not revealed to opposing teams until the competition starts.

Planting the Flags:
Each team is given at least one flag. Each team is given an equal number of flags. If
there are flags left over, the extra will be taken by the referees, in accordance with this
table:

Two Teams: Three flags each.
Three Teams: Two flags each.
Four Teams: One flag each, two flags taken by referees.
Five Teams: One flag each, one flag taken by referees.
Six Teams: One flag each.

The first team to plant a flag is determined by the roll of a die. The first team may plant
its flag at any distance and any angle from the target as long as it is at least five yards
and no more than 50 yards from the target. The angle to the target is limited by safety
and the terrain for the range. The archers must be able to see the face of the target
from the flag. No measuring devices may be used in determining the placement of
flags.

The second team places its flag in accordance with the same rules listed in the above
paragraph.

All flags are planted until there are no more flags.

The referees place flags in rotation with the teams.

The Match:
A “Match” refers to the contest between an archer from each team. The following
describes a Match.

Calling the Archers:
At the referee’s behest, the first archer in each team’s Lineup approaches. The names
of the archers to compete in each Match are announced by the herald or marshal.

Selecting the flags to use:
Two flags are selected at random by the roll of a die.

Loosing the arrows:
Each archer will loose two arrows from each flag in rotation. The first archer will loose
one arrow, then the next archer will loose one arrow, and the archers will rotate until all
the arrows are loosed.

Position and posture:
The position and posture from which the arrow is loosed is up to the individual archer
as long as one foot is in contact with the flag and the sole of at least one foot is flat on
the ground, and it is consistent with the rules of archery safety of the SCA.

Scoring

Calculating Score:
The score will be calculated using the concentric circles on the target, scoring 1 on the
outermost circle, increasing by two for every circle closer to the center and 7 on the
innermost circle.

Arrows that touch lines:
If an arrow touches the line of the next higher score, it will count as that next higher
score. Referees must agree on questionable scores.

Accumulated Team Scores:
Regardless of the winner of the match, the scores from all archers in that match are
accumulated in the team score.

Elimination:
The archer with the lowest score in a Match is eliminated from the competition, or
alternately, given one strike, and if an archer receives two strikes, they are eliminated
from the competition.

Non-zero ties:
In case of a tie for the lowest score in which the score is greater than zero, the arrow
which is closest to the center wins.

Non-scoring ties:
If two or more archers tie for the lowest score by missing the target completely with
every arrow, neither is eliminated and survive to shoot another match.

Changing the Lineup due to an elimination:
After an archer is eliminated, all subsequent archers will move up in the lineup to fill
the gap without changing the sequence of the remaining archers.

Winning Score:
Any team that first achieves the Winning Score, as long as they still have at least one
archer who has not been eliminated, wins the competition.

See Special Case below

Special Case:
If a team has only one archer left, and that archer achieves the Winning Score while
simultaneous being eliminated, that team does not win. The Winning Score must be
achieved without that team being eliminated from the competition.

Penalties
Any violation of the rules for loosing an arrow, as determined by the referees, will result
in that arrow’s score counted as zero. Any violation of safety rules, as determined by the
referees, will result in the elimination of the offender.
Modification of Rules.
Rules may be modified en loco by the marshal to accommodate archers
with special needs.
