Newbie Journal Part 4
Beltane, May 2004
What can I say about Beltane? I think the tnet says it all. The sight was gorgeous, the mead
(Thanks to Méabh) was the best I've had, and the company was fabulous.

That said... our camp table blew out the back of the car on the way up, traffic was terrible,
and I got lost twice so it took us about 4 1/2 hours to get there. Then I put the tent together
wrong, in the blazing sun. So I took the tent apart (also in the blazing sun) and put it back
together (also in the blazing sun). Thankfully Rat was there to help me, as my children were
completely unhelpful.

So it was about 37 degrees that night and my daughter spent the whole night trying to crawl
on top of me. Around 2 in the morning I kept hearing Bryne's name mentioned outside my
tent. I kep thinking I should go out and help with the tent, but I was too cold to get out from
under the covers. Plus, I'd brought "period" pajamas, which were of hanky weight linen. As
cold as it was, there would be no leaving anything to the imagination in that outfit!

So I find out the next morning (after I set my camp stove aflame and ruin it for good) that
Bryne had gotten in late at night not knowing the site was a working sheep ranch and pets
were strictly forbidden. She had Snickers (her dog) with her and they sent her away! So
she had to deal with all of the stuff in the middle of the night!

Anastasia and I put together the Collegium catalogs in the morning. The feast tickets sold
out pretty quickly and she started wait-listing people. I went over to hang out with the
Clothiers  Guild at their booth for a little while and dropped of some catalogs. There seems
to be quite a bit of interest in the collegium. Everyone was so nice! I got an email from one
of the ladies on Sunday night and her sister, who is local, came to the Shire meeting. I hope
she had fun!

I got to hang out with Méabh and Rowan a little bit. Méabh is quite the brewer! I am
not sure what I thought mead would taste like? Possibly very syrupy? But it had a very
clean and light flavor and was truly delicious. I usually try to bring my own brewskies and
not mooch off other people, but you can't go buy this stuff, it's kind of a one-of-a-kind
thing, and it was gooooood!

I tried to go very low key with the food stuff, basically a lot of cold stuff. This was a huge
mistake! I had hardly anything of value to contribute to the greater good and my kids were
doing their best to scarf all of the great food everyone else brought!

I had a great time at the Saucy Wench and got to meet quite a few new people. I got to
hang out with Hillarie and Bjorn, who are so much fun! I also got to talk to one of my new
heros, Mari Alexander. She will be teaching a class at Collegium (that I am taking)  and I
had seen a few pictures of some of the garb she's constructed. The woman is unbelievable!
And she kicks butt on the battlefield too. I met Fabian's lady, who is happily expecting their
first child. The rest is a drunken blur? I woke up with a lot of chocolate chip cookie crumbs
in my bra... not sure how those got there? Apparently, I was trying to sneak cookies out in
my bodice in an Atkins inspired episode.

In general, I keep thinking my next camping trip will be without kids and without La Balena
Bianca. As a matter of fact, I saw this cot that has a tiny tent that just covers the top of the
cot and as a bonus, the cot becomes a lounge chair during the day! AND it folds down to a
tiny little suitcase! That is looking pretty darn good to me!
